Joyce Marilynn Philp (nee Huston)

Joyce died peacefully on Monday February 13, 2023, at Lee Manor in Owen Sound, with family by her side.

Predeceased by her parents Florence and Clifford (G.C.) Huston, by her husband Paul (2018), and by her sister Marjorie (Chisholm) (2021).

Loving mother of Dale (Michael Quigley), John (Janie Newlands) and Paul. Aunt of Susan Schultz (Greg). Devoted grandmother of Jamie (Kim), Trevor (Ana), Huston, Austin and Meaghan and Great grandmother of Sloan.

Joyce was born in Kincardine and raised in Southampton. She attended Teachers’ College in Stratford and taught Grade 2 in the Leaside area of Toronto. Joyce met her future husband, Paul, on the golf course in Southampton in the summer of 1952. They married in 1953, and Joyce then moved into her new lifetime role as a stay-at-home mom, raising her three children with dedication and passion.

Joyce and Paul loved their travels, throughout Europe, by boat and on foot. There were many ski trips in North America and Europe, on their own and with family, and regular weekends at Holimont, in Ellicottville, New York. But best of all, she loved her summers with the family, and then her retirement years with Paul at their cottage on Lake Huron in Southampton, enjoying the most beautiful sunsets in the world.

Joyce contributed to the community as well. She gave her time to the Junior League of Hamilton, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, and The McCallion Planetarium at McMaster University.  Later, she studied and passed the Canadian Securities Course to challenge herself and stay active.  The Business section of the paper was always beside her and she read it voraciously every day.

Joyce enjoyed her brisk walks every day, playing bridge with friends, her Sudoku puzzles, and golfing with Paul. She loved attending a number of plays and musicals each summer at the  Stratford and Shaw Festivals with long time good friends.

Joyce was a wonderfully gifted chef and baker, from the simple to the gourmet. She and Paul loved summer family dinners at Lake Huron, and they loved to entertain their many friends. She was known for her peach and other fruit pies made throughout every summer, and friends rarely turned down an invitation to join her and Paul at their dinner table, which was always lively, talkative, and lots of fun.

Our family is grateful for the wonderful care and support Joyce received at Lasalle Retirement Community in Burlington during the 4 years following Paul’s death; during an extremely brief stay at Hampton Court in Southampton; a slightly longer stay at Saugeen Memorial Hospital in Southampton, and finally during another brief sojourn on her final journey, at Lee Manor in Owen Sound.

Cremation has taken place. Interment at Southampton Cemetery will be held later this year, in the spring or summer. In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for you to consider a donation to the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation in Southampton, Ontario.
