Obituary

In the comfort of her own home, surrounded by the love of her family, Heather Jean Hutton (nee McCannel) passed away on Sunday November 17th, 2024 at the age of 71.

Beloved wife of Bob Hutton of Port Elgin. Loving mother of Megan Hutton of London and Jordan Rosner and her husband Mack of Southampton. Proud Nana of Evy and Maeve Rosner. Dear sister of Peter McCannel and his wife Joan of Burgoyne. Fondly remembered by in-laws Ron and Barb France, Jim and Patti Hutton, Bill and Joanne Hutton, Lorna Hutton and Lee Fuller, Marg Hutton and Angelique Ali, and her many nieces and nephews.

Heather is pre-deceased by her parents Alec and Jean McCannel (nee McAllister) of Burgoyne, her in-laws Jim and Irene Hutton (nee Fisk) of Tiverton, and her sister Sharon France (nee McCannel) of Sauble Beach.

Born on July 1st, 1953 at the Saugeen Memorial Hospital in Southampton, Heather was the middle sibling of Sharon and Peter. She grew up on the McCannel farm on the top of the hill in Burgoyne. Heather attended the Burgoyne school, Arran Tara Elementary, and then Saugeen District High School, creating friendships along the way that would last a lifetime. Following high school, Heather started her career at Ontario Hydro in 1972. She started in the typing pool at the Bruce Heavy Water Plant eventually making her way to a D2O Inventory Clerk and later a personal assistant. After retiring in 2006, she spent a year enjoying curling, yoga, golf, and lots of long walks, but she was easily convinced to return to work for a “temporary” contract. Her wealth of knowledge, work ethic, and professionalism led to 11 more years of cherished time at Bruce Power.  She truly valued her years spent at the Bruce site, where she met so many people who became so important to her.

Life outside of work was just as busy and filled with fun for Heather.  She so enjoyed her travels with Bob, the girls and often family and friends.  She loved experiencing Romania, was enthralled by the history and scenery when floating down the Danube on a riverboat cruise, and absolutely looked the regal part taking Bob’s arm at the Kentucky Derby and Queen’s Plate. She travelled both east and west across the country and made a point to share her 60th birthday with the rest of Canada in Ottawa on July 1st. And of course, a zip in the countryside in the little green Miata, 9 holes on the golf course, or entertaining friends and family in their beautiful back yard made her just as happy.

Heather had a quiet but social nature, easily making friends wherever she went. She had a knack for making everyone feel special with her ever-present smile, kind words, and she always made an effort to stop and chat. Heather dedicated countless hours helping out with the Port Elgin and Saugeen Shores Skating Clubs, and the many Burgoyne Church suppers. She had a very caring and generous soul, and was willing to lend a hand or an ear to anyone who needed it.

Bob and Heather shared a genuinely loving and happy marriage, and they proudly raised their two daughters to carry forward the same values and zest for life. They welcomed Mack with loving arms; he was the perfect fit for their family. While Heather excelled at being a wife and mother, there was no role more important to her than that of Nana to her adored granddaughters, Evy Jean and Maeve Megan. Heather gave selflessly and tirelessly to her family. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do to help them out. She simply had a heart of gold. Whatever was special to the people Heather loved was special to her, and for this reason, memories of her will be cherished forever.

Special thank you to Dr. Murray, Dr. Barghi, and the countless caring nurses and doctors at London Health Sciences Centre, South Bruce Grey Health Centre, and Brightshores Health System who helped support and guide Heather and her family through the last 3 years. The nursing staff at CarePartners provided compassionate, professional, expert care to Heather throughout her journey, and allowed Heather to fulfill her wish of spending her final days at home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Heather’s name to the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation or the Knox Presbyterian Church, Burgoyne.

A celebration of Heather’s life will be held at Lakeshore Recreation Centre, 1177 Goderich Street, Port Elgin on Sunday November 24th, 2024 from 2:00pm-5:00pm. Words of remembrance will take place at 3:00pm.
